| Google Engineers Flirted With a Zoom Acquisition—Before a Push to Beat It - The Information Posted: 04 May 2020 07:01 AM PDT  Not long ago, Google and Zoom Video Communications had cordial relations. In 2018, several thousand Google employees were using Zoom as an alternative to Google's own videoconferencing product, said a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The popularity of Zoom within Google even prompted some Google Cloud engineers to discuss acquiring Zoom late that year. They went so far as to evaluate what would be a reasonable price to pay and calculated the unit economics for the service if it ran on Google's servers, according to a person who has worked at Google Cloud. Zoom was one of several companies the Google engineers evaluated in this way, said the former Google Cloud employee. The internal discussions didn't get very far.  |
| Splunk Cloud analytics platform lands on Google Cloud in beta - SiliconANGLE Posted: 05 May 2020 06:00 AM PDT  Splunk Inc. is bringing its big-data analytics platform to Google Cloud and integrating it with a number of Google Cloud services to enable enterprises to get more actionable insights from their data and drive faster decision-making. Splunk Cloud is a version of Splunk's main Data-to-Everything platform, delivered as software-as-a-service. The software is used by enterprises to search, correlate, analyze, monitor and report on data in real time. By integrating with Google Cloud, Splunk's customers will be able to make data-driven decisions without needing to buy, manage or deploy any additional information technology architecture, the companies said. "Splunk Cloud on Google Cloud brings customers a "single-pane view for investigating, monitoring, analyzing and acting on their data" that's secured within their Google Cloud infrastructure, the companies said. In addition, Splunk Cloud customers can tap Google Cloud's technology capabilities, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, security, networking and data analytics. Meanwhile, the integrations with Google Anthos, Google Cloud Security Command Center and Stackdriver help ensure the most critical Splunk data can be shared among various applications, enabling customers to draw insights from multiple cloud platforms. Google Cloud Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kurian cited Splunk's additional data analytics capabilities for information technology, security and user behavior. "We chose to partner with Google Cloud to deliver the technology, capabilities and trusted infrastructure required to help businesses connect all forms of data," said Splunk CEO Doug Merritt. "Splunk's partnership with Google Cloud will help empower even more customers to harness nearly limitless data opportunities across IT, Security and Application Development while remaining agile and cost-effective." Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller told SiliconANGLE that it makes tremendous sense for Splunk to get its software on infrastructure-as-a-service platforms such as Google's cloud. Splunk Cloud is already available on Amazon Web Services. "The data-intensive nature of Splunk, coupled with Google's data and AI capabilities, makes these two vendors a powerful combination to help enterprises make sense of their data and power their next-generation applications," Mueller said. "Going forward it will be interesting to see if Splunk will be able to provide a common layer for Splunk Cloud across its different IaaS partners. After all, workload and code asset portability matters to enterprises as they wish to avoid vendor lock-in." Splunk Cloud on Google Cloud is now available in beta for early access customers, with general availability of the service promised later in the year. Splunk's Merritt has been a regular guest on SiliconANGLE's mobile livestreaming studio theCUBE.
